In-House Videographer vs. Video Marketing Agency: Which Is Right for Your Home Service Business?
July 29, 2026
A common question on Walkthrough Calls: “Why shouldn’t I just hire a videographer who already knows social media and can do everything for me right away?”
It’s a reasonable instinct — one hire, one salary, done. But it usually doesn’t play out that way, and the reason comes down to what that hire actually needs in order to be effective, not just capable.
Skill isn’t the same as a system
A good videographer with social media experience can shoot and edit. That’s real, valuable skill. What they don’t have on day one is the system: the ideation process, the shot planning, the editing workflow, and the posting schedule that’s actually been tailored to your specific business over time.
We’ve spent hundreds of hours building that — figuring out what content style and posting cadence actually performs for home service businesses like yours, and refining it over a 6-month production cycle. That’s not something a new hire arrives with, no matter how talented they are. They have to build it from scratch, on your clock, at your expense, while your content output stays inconsistent in the meantime.
What that actually costs
Here’s the real math: if you hire a videographer at, say, $25–30/hour and give them the freedom to figure out ideation, planning, shooting, editing, and scheduling on their own, you’re paying full wages for months of trial and error before they’re operating efficiently. Conservatively, that can mean tens of thousands of dollars spent before that hire is producing anything close to the volume and consistency a dialed-in system produces from week one.
With the right frameworks already built and handed off, that same employee can become dramatically more efficient — often several times more productive per hour than someone building the whole process from scratch. The frameworks are what make the difference, not just the person.
So when does hiring in-house make sense?
Once the system already exists. That’s the whole idea behind Arkon’s In-House Transition Plan — we build and prove the system first, over your first 6 months, using it to produce 30 videos a month for your business specifically. Once it’s working, hiring becomes a much lower-risk decision: you’re hiring someone to run a proven playbook, not build one from nothing.
That’s a very different hire than the one you’d be making on day one — and it’s a much better use of a new employee’s time and your money.
